Retail clinics: A threat or a promise?
Should small and midsize physician practices consider retail clinics direct threats to their livelihood, or as complementary community facilities occasionally filling in when patients don’t have access to their regular doctor?
That may be the million-dollar question for primary care providers in light of ongoing, aggressive growth in the retail model.
“You’ll probably hear a lot of noise about how retail clinics are taking away the bread and butter of the family practice, but most rational family practice doctors no longer view this as a huge competitive threat,” said Tom Charland, CEO of research and consulting firm Merchant Medicine. “And there’s much less emotion around that issue today than there was several years ago when these clinics first came out.”
